The Challenge

To create a striking cover for a dark psychological thriller centred on a woman accused of a notorious murder as a teenager, who is given a chance to finally tell her side of the story twenty years later.

The challenge was to communicate duality, uncertainty and psychological tension while making the book immediately recognisable as a contemporary thriller

The Solution

I developed a bold split-image concept using contrasting blue and yellow lighting to represent the two sides of the story — innocence and guilt, truth and deception, past and present.

A shadowed female face creates a sense of mystery and ambiguity, while the distressed typography and high-contrast colour palette give the cover a gritty, unsettling quality. The visual language was designed to sit confidently within the psychological thriller market while giving the title a distinctive identity.

The Result

The final cover is bold, atmospheric and instantly intriguing, with the contrasting colour treatment creating strong shelf and thumbnail impact.

The combination of portraiture, shadow and distressed typography communicates the book's psychological themes without revealing too much of the story, creating a cover that raises questions and encourages the reader to discover what really happened.
