The Challenge

To create a YA cover addressing serious themes of depression and teenage suicide, while retaining the wit, warmth and youthful perspective of the story.

The Solution

I created a moody, atmospheric illustration centred around the contrast between the dark storm clouds and the lighter world below. The lightning and drifting figures hint at the protagonist’s emotional turmoil and the presence of the “ghost”, while the row of houses grounds the story in an everyday teenage world.

The Result

A visually striking cover that balances darkness with a sense of hope and mystery. The illustrative style and strong typography give it a clear YA identity while reflecting the novel’s more serious emotional themes.
