The Challenge

The challenge was to create a cover for a dark, atmospheric thriller that communicates the novel’s themes of mystery, trauma, identity and redemption without revealing too much of the story. The cover needed to feel unsettling and emotionally charged while still having a strong, commercial fiction aesthetic.

The Solution

I used hollyhock flowers as the central visual motif, directly referencing their importance within the story and creating an immediate connection between the cover and the mysterious Hollyhock Asylum.

The dark, textured background contrasts with the vivid flowers, creating a sense of beauty that feels slightly corrupted and unsettling. The flowers are deliberately positioned around and across the typography, making the imagery feel intertwined with the story rather than simply decorative.

The title, The Redemption of Morgan Bright, is given a strong central position and carefully layered within the floral imagery. The delicate stems crossing through the title create a subtle sense of entanglement and concealment, reflecting Morgan's struggle to uncover the truth while becoming increasingly caught within the world she is investigating.

The contrast between the beautiful hollyhocks and the darker, almost decayed atmosphere reinforces the book's underlying themes of life, death, transformation and redemption.

The Result

The finished cover creates a dark, sophisticated and atmospheric thriller identity that immediately communicates mystery while retaining an element of beauty. The use of hollyhock gives the design a distinctive visual hook and provides a meaningful connection to the narrative.

The combination of floral imagery, deep tones and prominent typography creates a cover that feels intriguing and slightly unsettling, encouraging the reader to question what lies beneath the surface — much like Morgan herself.
