The Challenge

The challenge was to create a cover for a Finnish noir crime thriller centred on murder, mystery and fractured relationships. The design needed to communicate the cold, isolated atmosphere of Helsinki while reflecting the darker themes of identity, suspicion and belonging. It also needed to stand out within the crime market without relying on a conventional image of a detective or crime scene.

The Solution

I used a cold, wintry landscape to immediately establish the Finnish setting and create a feeling of isolation. The snow-covered trees and winding road suggest the remote environment in which the story takes place, while the car and its headlights introduce a subtle sense of movement and mystery. I used a deep blue colour palette to create a cold, bleak atmosphere, contrasted with bold red typography to introduce danger, violence and tension. The large, condensed title dominates the composition, giving the cover a strong and recognisable crime-thriller identity.

The Result

The final design creates a cold, atmospheric and unsettling noir aesthetic. The contrast between the blue landscape and red typography makes the cover visually striking while reinforcing the themes of danger and suspicion. The distant car adds intrigue without revealing too much of the story, encouraging the reader to question what is happening within the isolated landscape. The result is a contemporary crime cover that feels distinctive while remaining clearly positioned within the Nordic noir genre.
