The Challenge

The challenge was to create a contemporary thriller cover for The Drowned Siren that communicated the novel’s themes of death, obsession, revenge and psychological tension. The design needed to feel atmospheric and intriguing while avoiding an overly literal representation of the story.

The Solution

I created a dark, cinematic underwater image that immediately connects with the title The Drowned Siren. The distorted treatment of the title is central to the concept: the lettering is disrupted, echoing the way text and vision can become distorted beneath water. This creates a visual link between the typography and the submerged figure, while also suggesting the fractured relationships, secrets and psychological instability within the story.

The deep blue tones establish a mysterious underwater atmosphere, contrasted with warmer highlights that add tension and visual depth.

The Result

The final cover creates a distinctive and unsettling thriller identity. The distorted title makes it feel physically submerged, turning the words themselves into part of the imagery rather than simply labelling the cover. This gives the design a strong conceptual hook, while the dramatic photography and contrasting colour palette create immediate impact and intrigue.
