The Challenge

Create a striking cover for Guzzlers, a sci-fi horror novel centred on mysterious UFOs that abduct cars and their occupants. The design needed to communicate danger, mystery and an otherworldly presence while appealing to a broad science-fiction audience. It also needed to feel visually connected to Christopher Hinz’s previous novel, Scales, creating a recognisable author identity across the books.

The Solution

I developed a bold, retro-inspired illustrated cover that combines a cinematic sense of movement with a deliberately mysterious narrative. A car being pulled up into the sky becomes the central visual, immediately suggesting danger and the unexplained, while beams of light and a concealed UFO hint at the threat without revealing too much.

A dark, atmospheric palette creates the sci-fi horror tone, while contrasting warm and cool colours give the cover energy and strong shelf impact. Layered forest silhouettes establish the remote wilderness setting, and the bold, condensed typography reinforces the graphic, vintage sci-fi aesthetic. The visual language was also designed to complement Scales, allowing the two books to work as a cohesive series/author collection.

The Result

The final cover creates an immediate sense of mystery, danger and movement, communicating the premise without being overly literal. The combination of the falling car, UFO imagery and wilderness setting gives readers visual clues while leaving enough unanswered to encourage curiosity.

The strong typography, limited colour palette and distinctive illustration give the book excellent thumbnail and shelf visibility, while the retro sci-fi aesthetic positions it clearly within the genre. Most importantly, the design establishes a consistent visual relationship with Scales, helping to create a recognisable and cohesive identity across Christopher Hinz’s books.
